Lady of Almudena statue
Lady of Almudena Figurine (ships without packaging)
The Virgin of Almudena, patron saint of Madrid, has its named derived from the place it was found—a Muslim citadel or almudayna.
One of the popular stories surrounding is that of an icon of the Virgin Mary secreted inside the town walls before the town’s capture by Muslim troops. When the town was reconquered centuries later by King Alfonso VI of Castile, he endeavored to find the legendary statue even if it meant destroying the whole wall.
The key to secret to where it could be found, alas, lay in the forgetful mind of a young girl. Thankfully, after much prayer, she had a vision of where it could be found.
Today, the feast day of the Virgin of Almudena, November 9, is a major holiday in Madrid. Commemorate the day or the story with this hand-painted figurine.
