Saint Dymphna statue

Saint Dymphna was born in the 7th century in Clogher, Ireland. Her father, the king of Oriel, was pagan and her mother was a Christian. When she was fourteen years old, Saint Dymphna consecrated herself to Jesus Christ and took a vow of chastity. Shortly after, her mother died. The king, who deeply loved his wife, began to become psychologically unstable, and his counselors suggested he remarry. But the only person who was similar to his wife, with a stunning beauty and exemplary morale, was Saint Dymphna. When she realized that her father wanted to marry her, she fled with Father Gerebran to the town of Geel, in present-day Belgium. They were discovered by the king's army and, after much resistance, both were killed.

Many people report miraculous healings near the place where Dymphna died.

Saint Dymphna is the patron saint of psychiatrists, psychologists, and all people suffering from mental illness.

Her feast day is May 15th.
